Bernardsville is a small but affluent borough of Central New Jersey. Located at the northernmost part of Somerset County, it is a highly sought-after residential area because of its proximity to the metropolitan areas within the state and in New York. Its rich natural background includes some of the few remaining stretches of North America’s Great Eastern Forest.

Bernardsville measures just under 13 square miles and is home to around 7,700 residents, based on 2010 data. It is an ideal location for family residences, thanks to the area’s peaceful reputation and notable school system. It also offers easy access to and from the New York metropolis, with about 40 train and 30 bus trips per day.

The borough was formerly part of the Bernards Township, thus the similarity in names. Bernardsville is a relatively young municipality, having claimed its independence in 1924.

The Bernardsville brand of education is one of the most sought-after in the region. Schools deliver outstanding results that earn high spots on national rankings every school year.

The Somerset High School Regional School District is a public school system that covers the pre-kindergarten through twelfth-grade levels. Enrollees include kids from Bernardsville, as well as neighboring Far Hills Township, Peapack-Gladstone, and Bedminster.

Secondary level students attend Bernards High School, where half of the junior and senior high school population are enrolled in Advanced Placement classes, resulting in a remarkable 97% college enrollment rate. SAT average scores are also impressive at 1,708.

  This local neighborhood was recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places for influencing the development of the borough since the early 20th century. The dwellings constructed there during the first three decades of the 1900s still stand today, offering a snapshot of the location’s history as a preferred neighborhood among the East Coast’s middle and upper classes.

  Boasting a rich history dating back to 1899, this exclusive social and recreational club features a golf course with 18 lush fairways, as well as beautifully maintained grass tennis courts.

• Scherman-Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary
  Birdwatching tops the list of unique nature-inspired recreational activities in this facility, but that’s only scratching the surface. The sanctuary also boasts a long list of scheduled activities like digital photography workshops, naturalist-teacher training, and various educational events for all ages.
