Summit is a 6-square-mile city in Union County, just 25 miles west of New York. The city is home to approximately 21,000 residents, who enjoy the city’s small-town suburban vibe, highly regarded schools, and convenient commute access via Route 24 and the I-78.

The city’s name comes from its location on the Second Watchung Mountain (hence, it’s also known as “Hill City”), but is also descriptive of its affluence. Summit’s bustling downtown retail area is central to the city’s local economy, as it showcases nine blocks and over 200 widely varied stores and shops. Visitors can expect high-quality merchandise and first-rate services befitting the city’s upscale crowd, as local merchants who go by the motto, “Summit means Service.”

There are also high-profile employers that operate within Summit City limits. Summit’s fair share of large corporations include multinational companies involved in biotech, computing, and global telecommunications services.

Schools

The Summit Public Schools system is one of the major draws for the city’s prospective residents. Serving students from pre-kindergarten to the twelfth grade, the district’s nine schools recorded a remarkable 12.30:1 student-teacher ratio in the 2012-13 school year.

Summit High School placed 76th out of the best 500 high schools in the country in Newsweek’s “America’s Best High Schools of 2016” list. A 2015 New York Times article attested to the high school’s quality education, reporting above-average SAT scores of 576 in reading, 599 in math, and 583 in writing. State averages are 496, 521, and 497, respectively.

• Springfield Avenue
  This primary downtown destination features boutiques, restaurants, and cafes aplenty, alongside classic homes. While you’re in the area, don’t miss the retro-styled Summit Diner, a local Hill City icon just a five-minute walk from the main street.

• Carter House
  Constructed around 1741, Carter House is Summit’s oldest known structure, which now hosts the Summit Historical Society. The organization actively preserves and exhibits photographs, genealogy files, maps, postcards, yearbooks, and other artifacts that illustrate Summit’s rich history.

• Reeves-Reed Arboretum
  This facility is open to visitors free of charge. It’s built on a portion of historically significant real estate and is now a venue for learning and appreciation of nature for residents and guests of all ages.
